Main Article:
After the final game of the 18/19
season, Greg James interviewed an up and coming star in the Premier League,
John Davidson and asked a question on every young boy’s lips: What does it take
to become a pro?
“I’m sure most young lads aspire
to become a pro, but the football world is very competitive and to be a pro
there will be sacrifices and hard work along the way.
First of all, everyone has to
start somewhere, so I advise all of you young lads reading this to join a
Sunday league team. This is a great first step because you never know who’s
watching among the parents every Sunday. If you’re lucky, a scout may be
interested in you. Personally, I joined a local team in Essex called Thurrock
Tigers and during my man of the match performance in a cup final, a scout gave
me an opportunity to join Southend’s academy.
This links to my next point
because you need to take any opportunity, otherwise you may regret it and be on
the wrong path to becoming a pro.
Once you have signed your first pro
contract, just enjoy playing football. I know this is a cliché, but if you don’t
enjoy what you’re doing, you won’t improve and lose your one chance to make a
name for yourself in the football world. Also, make sure to train really hard
and persevere through the hard times because if you have a giving up attitude,
you’ll be dropped from the academy in no time.
My next step is to stay patient
because if your performances on the pitch are impressive, you’ll soon work your
way up the academy and earn yourself first team football.
I hope this guide has answered
your questions. I hope to see you lads in the future playing pro football.”
